How to choose the right multifoil for your project.
How do I choose the right multifoil is a question we get asked a lot. When buying PIR boards and other traditional types of insulation, your already familiar with knowing what you need to buy. You simply choose the thickness that you need, and you’re done. Even when buying online, it’s easy to understand the difference between a 50mm and a 100mm board or slab.
Choosing the right multifoil insulation is just as easy, as long as you remember that not all multifoils are made the same. The majority of multifoil manufacturers produce products that range between 30-40mm thick. However, SuperFOIL offers a range of products varying in thicknesses from 30mm, 45mm, 65mm and even 100mm.
To help you purchase the best multifoil for your project, SuperFOIL have written a post to help answer some of the most asked questions when it comes to Multifoil Insulation.
What is the difference between SuperFOIL and other multifoil insulation brands?
With a selection of multifoils on the market, it’s easy to become confused about which product you should be choosing for your project.
When looking at multifoil insulation, it’s understandable that some people can think that one multifoil is the same as the next. However, this is not the case when it comes to SuperFOIL.
SuperFOIL have made it easy to choose by manufacturing a wide range of products, each with differing thicknesses and performance values. So, whatever the project, you are sure to be able to find something that fits your needs. From bubble foil to the worlds highest performing multifoil with SF60FR. SuperFOIL has something for every type of project.
Product Thickness Core R-value R-Value Installed with two 20mm airspaces
SF6 30mm 0.99 2.32
SF19+ 45mm 1.63 2.97
SF40 65mm 2.57 3.91
SF60FR 100mm 3.46 4.88
As you can see, with SuperFOILs extensive range of products, the thicker the insulation, the higher the R-value. This is due to an increase in the number of layers of foil and wadding contained within the product.
Can I meet new build regulations by just using a multifoil insulation?
There is a common misconception that multifoils cannot be used without traditional insulation types to meet current building regulations. Whilst this is true of some brands of multifoil, this is not the case with SuperFOIL due to the wide range of higher performance products on offer.
Take a look at some common solutions that we can offer using only SuperFOIL products to meet the current building regulations whether in a roof or wall.
Project Type Solution
New Build Wall 0.18U-value SuperFOIL SF60FR
Refurb/extension Wall 0.28 U-value SuperFOIL SF19+
You can see that using a single layer of SuperFOIL insulation is capable of achieving building regulations in both New Build and Refurbishment projects.
There is no additional insulation required to achieve the Building Regulations U-value targets.
Project Type Solution
Pitched Roof 0.18 U-Value SuperFOIL SF19BB Over Rafters SF40BB Under Rafters
Under and Over Rafter
Pitched Roof 0.18 U-Value SuperFOIL SF19+ Combined with SF40
Under Rafter
A solution using multiple SuperFOIL products can be used to achieve any
required performance. By choosing this type of ‘duet’ multifoil system, there is no
need for additional insulation to be added to achieve the correct U-value.
It’s always important to ensure you are meeting the correct U-value required by
building control. The SuperFOIL experts are always happy to provide U-value
calculations free of charge to ensure you find the perfect solution for your project’s needs.
I’ve heard that building control don’t accept multifoil insulation, is this true?
Not at all!
Multifoil insulation is used extensively in the build of houses, especially those which use modern methods of construction, which SuperFOIL is perfect for. We will even provide you with approved U-value calculations to submit with your building control application making the approval process easy.
Why should I choose a multifoil over traditional insulation?
Whilst PIR boards and fibre insulation are both good at what they do, there are certain advantages that multifoils can offer, that traditional insulation can’t.
One big difference is that traditional insulation only protects against two types of heat loss, conduction, and convection. Whereas SuperFOIL insulation not only protects against both forms of heat loss, but also radiant energy too. What this means for you, is that all types of heat transfer are being combatted, meaning a higher performing insulation that helps keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Another advantage of multifoil insulation is the ease of install compared to traditional insulation types. SuperFOIL insulation is installed in a continuous layer over the face of the timbers and stapled into place. Meaning no awkward cutting to fit perfectly between rafters, no excessive mess and no specialist tools required for installation.
What type of projects are multifoil insulations good for?
SuperFOIL insulation is suitable for all types of projects, from retrofit to new build and everything in between. Whatever the size of the project, we can help find you a suitable solution to meet your needs. We are even used to catering for those individual, one off projects, that require some out of the box thinking when it comes to insulation.
Multifoil insulations are quickly becoming the future of insulation , with properties that traditional insulations just can’t match. However when you choose SuperFOIL insulation, you can be sure that we will have a product to meet your needs, from breathable to non-combustible, we have it all.
